A Piper PA-11 at Toogoodoo Plantation

Sam discovered this Piper PA-11 at Toogoodoo Plantation near Charleston. It has the original PA-11 color scheme of blue and yellow. The setting makes you want to drink a mint julep and drawl “Frankly, Scarlet, I don’t give a damn!” But you don’t have to be a Southerner to appreciate the meticulous details and lovely lines of this fine flying machine.

History of the Piper PA-11

  • The Piper PA-11 is a high-wing braced cabin monoplane with tail-wheel landing gear. It has an enclosed cabin with two tandem seats. Early PA-11s had a Continental A65-8 engine, while the later ones had the option of a Continental C90-8.
  • The first production aircraft was completed at Lock Haven, PA in March 1947. Production continued at Lock Haven until September 1949. A second production line was established at Ponca City, PA between September 1947 and January 1948.
  • The original Piper PA-11 Cub Special featured a distinctive color scheme. It had a metallic blue lower half of the fuselage and Lock Haven Yellow on the rest of the aircraft. Later models were all yellow with a simple brown stripe. Early PA-11s are often described as having a blue and yellow color scheme. This color scheme is sometimes referred to as “Cub Yellow and Piper Trainer Blue”.
  • The blue and yellow scheme is less common in later models. Some examples (as shown in this print) with this original paint scheme still exist. They are appreciated for their historical accuracy and aesthetic appeal.
  • The Piper PA-11 was occasionally mounted on floats, for water use. This is illustrated on this website in another Sam Lyons print “Yellow Lure”.
  • The classic Piper J-3 Cub is known for it’s simple and lightweight design, as illustrated in this lighthearted Sam Lyons print “World’s Smallest Airport”.

The 15” x 20.5” prints are available in a Limited Edition size of 200 Signed and Numbered and 20 Artist Proofs.
