Who:
The Piper J-3 Cub was designed by C. Gilbert Taylor and manufactured by Piper Aircraft, founded by William T. Piper. Piper became known as the “Henry Ford of Aviation” due to the Cub’s affordability and popularity.

What:
It is a small, lightweight, two-seat monoplane. It’s known for its simple construction, ease of handling, and bright “Cub Yellow” color. It became iconic for training and recreational flying.

Where:
Originally the Cub was built in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. It was flown all over the U.S. and beyond. It could take off and land from grassy fields, rural airports, or short runways.

When:
The J-3 Cub was introduced in 1938 and produced through 1947. Over 20,000 units were built during this timeframe. It’s popularity continued well after production ended, with thousands still flying today.

Military:
During World War II, the U.S. military adapted the Cub for use as the L-4 Grasshopper. It was used as a liaison and observation aircraft. Some examples include artillery spotting, medical evacuation, and communication.
