Description
This Limited Edition print started with a photograph taken at the SUN ‘n FUN campus in Lakeland, Florida. Director of Operations Greg Gibson snapped the photo right before heading for the cockpit one morning. He posted the photo on Facebook; it was spotted and admired instantly by Sam and Mindy. Thus a painting was born. The magnificent biplane is a 1941 N2S3 Stearman Kaydet. It was donated to SUN ‘n FUN in 2008 by generous benefactor Dean Edmunds. Known as “Wonderful Wendy,” the airplane is maintained and flown by SUN ‘n FUN volunteers and staff. The aircraft travels to various events and airshows to promote SUN ‘n FUN. In the meantime, get a “Stearman Sunrise” for your home, office or hangar.
Warbird Stearman Biplane
The N2S-3 Stearman Kaydet is a classic World War II-era biplane. The biplane played a crucial role in training thousands of military pilots. It was built by Stearman Aircraft (later a division of Boeing). The Kaydet was the primary trainer for the U.S. Army Air Forces (PT-17) and U.S. Navy (N2S series) during the war.
A variant, the N2S-3, was produced in 1941. It was specifically built for the U.S. Navy. It featured a Continental R-670 radial engine, providing 220 horsepower. The plane had rugged construction and an open cockpit. These and other stable flying characteristics made it an ideal trainer for new pilots before they advanced to more complex military aircraft.
The N2S-3 Stearman Kaydet was painted in the Navy’s traditional yellow wing scheme. This biplane remains one of the most recognizable and beloved warbirds from the WWII era. Today, restored Stearman aircraft can be found at airshows, museums, and in private collections. The aircraft still thrill aviation enthusiasts with their nostalgic charm and graceful flight.
